Day 205 – Santa Catalina Monastery

Santa Catalina Monastery, Arequipa. I drag Ben along to visit this fully restored convent which turned out to be a very intriguing and beautiful place to explore. Vivid colourful alleyways and courtyards with orange trees & gardens this was built for the nuns of the Dominican order in 1579. A cloistered monastery for nearly 400 years, who only accepted women from wealthy Spanish families, was finally made open to the public in 1970.
