Photo of the day

Greetings from Ecuador!

Our days of travelling are moving faster than the hours spare to update our blogs. We have not been so fortunate to have access to fast internet through Peru and Bolivia for large photo gallery uploads. However, in the meantime I have been keeping a daily post on Facebook and we are now up to Day 230. I know hard to believe.

Day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

A friend, Sharon had recommended Colonia, Uruguay before we embarked on our trip to South America. This planted a seed in working out possible routes into Brazil. Uruguay attracts a lot of sun lovers to its coast and we started to research traveling to Brazil through this beautiful country. However, now is autumn and the cool weather isn’t perfect for beach travel and we also wanted to head north to Iguazu Falls, so we decide to take a day trip to Colonia instead.

There are so many highlights to see in Buenos Aires it was no wonder we had to spend two weeks here, and yet it didn’t seem enough time. Each day was filled with new sights but one that I had been looking forward to was Recoleta cemetery, where Evitas grave is located.

The Day of Memory

On our first Sunday in Buenos Aires we decided to go for a wander to Plaza de Mayo to take in some of the city sights. As we neared the centre, we started to notice people painting things on the street, and in the distance we could hear a lot of noise clearly being made by a lot of people. Ignoring the travelling advice of avoiding large congregations of rowdy people, we approached and saw a sea of people divided up into groups and carrying flags and banners.

Fútbol in Buenos Aires

We wanted to see a football (soccer) game in Buenos Aires, but it’s very difficult to get tickets for the better games. So even though it would not normally be our preferred way of taking in a local event, we decided to go on an organised tour to the River Plate vs Velez game at River Plate’s home stadium. River Plate is one of the two local Buenos Aires teams, the other being Boca Juniors. Games between these two are highly coveted, but Velez is also an arch rival so hopes were high for a thrilling game.
